In our previous post, we discussed the challenges of being a remote worker. If you are thinking of setting up a business – be it alone or with a group of friends – and planning to work successfully from home or remotely to save costs, today’s post is aimed at you.

Sure, working remotely will allow you to have a more flexible schedule, avoid annoying commutes and have a better work-life balance. BUT. It takes a whole lot of discipline and true grit to follow through on setting up a business and working from home. It’s definitely not a walk in the park! The following are some guidelines to follow to ensure you are successful and productive when working out of the traditional office environment.

  • Set Boundaries

A first step in discipline when working from home – Setting Boundaries! Ensure that you have set a designated area for working. You will need an area that’s comfortable and conducive but also far from tempting distractions like the TV, bed or the fridge!

Don’t forget to inform your family and friends your working hours – get them to respect your work style. Just because you work from home, doesn’t mean you’re welcoming any surprise visits from your loved ones.

  • Have The Right Mindset

Just because you’re working from home doesn’t mean you can sleep in and start work late. Set your work hours from 9 – 6. You may be working from home but your clients and suppliers work in a 9 – 6 office setting. It is important to have structured work schedule so that you don’t slack off or lose focus in your business. Remember, you’re working from home, not at home.

  • Looking Professional Still Matters

Rent a Virtual Office. No one will take you seriously when you give out business cards with your home address printed on it.

One Bizhub also provides meeting room spaces (discount for Virtual Office Members!) Also, you can always outsource some administrative work or receptionist services to a Virtual Office provider, like One Bizhub. Planning to get a fax machine? Save your money for other essential equipment because a Virtual Office will provide you with facsimile services too.

  • Invest on the right tools and supplies

Invest in professional office equipment and furniture. Office equipment such as a printer, the right laptop/desktop, or external hard disks for backing up your computer are some of the necessary told you need for everyday work. Investing in the right office furniture such as ergonomic chairs, desks and keyboard is essential so that you are not vulnerable to stress or strain injuries. Your health should always be placed first – being physically and mentally fit will only benefit you and your work.

  • Get Organized

Get all your paperwork and files organized. Yes, this includes the files on your computer too! Find a way to organize your files clearly – whether it’s labeling them or colour coding them. The last thing you need is to waste 3 hours of your time searching for a file or a sticky note you scribbled something important on.

Next, make sure you have a work schedule and you prioritize your workload. Once you have you space equipped and all the tools you need and organized, the main priority should be getting customers for your business!

  • Communicate constantly

Communicate with your teammates or partners.
Utilize the various communication apps available – most of them are free anyways! Establishing a communication line and staying connected with your team is essential for your business to work – your team and you has to know what work needs to be done and when it needs to be done. Communication is also important for preventing isolation, which can be very demotivating for you and your team.
